This place is a very special place. Not only does it have some amazing hand stencils but it also has stencils of baby feet. I am not aware of the same stenciling anywhere.
It’s about 15 kays north of Rylstone in a spot called Growee Gulf, right across from the northern end of Ferntree Gully Environmental Reserve. Bylong Valley Road dips downhill and swings right (if you’re heading north), and you’ll see a small clearing off to the left hand side of the road if you are heading north. Its basically in the dip as you come down the hill and you wont miss it unless you are flying.
From there, a 4WD track heads off, but don’t get too excited – it turns into a walking track after about 50 metres. Follow that track down into a little gully, past some prickly Bursaria spinosa bushes, and then climb back up the other side. When the track splits, stick to the left, and you’ll come across this jaw-dropping boulder shaped like a bird’s head. Its about 100 meters up the hill and halfway there you will see a rusty old sign.
Up high on the right side of the rock, you’ll see stacks of hand stencils. (Not handprints – proper stencils, where ochre or pigment was blown over a hand. Way rarer than your everyday handprints.) Some of them are super clear, while others look way older, like proper ancient.
Most of these stencils are way too high for the ground level now. Makes you wonder – has the ground eroded that much since they were made? Or did they build ladders, scaffolds, or maybe even form human pyramids to get up there?
This spot gets its English name from two little baby footprints stencilled higher than anything else, completely out of reach for even the tallest person. They’re a bit of a mystery but a pretty cute one at that.
You will see a metal box on a pole which has a visitor book in it and a pen. It goes back a about a decade so make sure you leave your make by signing it.
This place is incredible, please treat it with the respect it deserves.
